A Homeless Man Asked a Restaurant Manager for a Bite to Eat. Instead, He Got a Question…

When an unkempt man walked in to a Minneapolis restaurant in early March asking for a handout, it could have gone any number of ways.

The employees could have ignored him, asked him to leave, or just handed over a little something and sent him on his way.

Instead, the owner of the cafe, 25-year-old Abigail Cesi, presented him with another option altogether — and it’s one that’s affected both of their lives in ways they couldn’t have expected.

After the man, who goes by Marcus and is homeless, asked for his handout, Cesi challenged him with the question:

“Why don’t you have a job? You know nothing is given to me for free, right?”

Marcus’s reply was too candid to be anything but the truth:

“Well, I have a lot of felonies and no one wants to hire me for that.

So, now I had to turn myself to the streets and get money the only way I know — stealing and asking for money.”

Instead of perpetuating the difficult cycle Marcus had found himself in, Cesi decided to take a chance on the man, and — because she was, coincidentally, short-staffed that day — offered him a proposition: in return for washing dishes in the back, Cesi would provide him with a meal.

That very first day, when Marcus finished his work and the young woman gave him a sandwich in return, she could already feel that she’d made the right choice as she watched him eat only half and then step outside to offer the rest to a homeless woman nearby.

In the weeks since, Marcus has returned to Abi’s Cafe every day for his two-hour shift, washing dishes and taking care of other chores in return for wages.

Afterwards, Marcus now chooses to stay at the cafe, insisting that he pay for his meals as it simply “makes him feel good” to do so.

For Cesi — who says she sees Marcus as a “blessing” — it was a decision based on personal experience:

“Just like Marcus, I had my help. I had plenty of people to help make it to where I am today.

They believed I could do it. People need to have someone believe in them.”

Cesi explains that she’s been so happy with the job Marcus has been doing, she plans to make his place at Abi’s Cafe permanent, adding that the exposure she’s received since sharing her story online has boosted her business as well.

Sean Astin Reveals His Plans for Making Sure His Mom Patty Duke’s Legacy Lives On

Iconic actress and mental health activist Patty Duke passed away today at the age of 69. Her son, Sean Astin, posted to social media about it:

His post reads:

I love you mom.

OUR FAMILY STATMENT ON THE PASSING OF PATTY DUKE

This morning, our beloved wife, mother, grandmother, matriarch and the exquisite artist, humanitarian, and champion for mental health, Anna PATTY DUKE Pearce, closed her eyes, quieted her pain and ascended to a beautiful place. We celebrate the infinite love and compassion she shared through her work and throughout her life,

Her work endures…

He then ended with a link to a fundraising page for the Patty Duke Mental Health Project:

Astin went into great detail on the fundraising site, also explaining how it came to be:

Before her passing, before the suffering became too great, we talked about how the core mission of her mental health work might continue beyond her life. This initiative will fuel a multi-level approach to achieving results for those suffering with mental illness and their families and communities.

Public awareness campaigns, lobbying efforts, and supporting a multitude of mental health programs big and small will be organized, prioritized and vigorously pursued.

Duke touched the lives of many people throughout her own life and some of them reached out to Astin to share their stories:

In 2010, Duke revealed to Everyday Health that she had made “upwards of five” attempts on her own life before finally being diagnosed with bipolar disorder in 1982.

What she wanted others to learn from her own experience was:

“That there is hope. To know that someone else got out of the pit and is functioning is vital.”

The Patty Duke Mental Health Project is designed to help raise that crucial awareness and keep her legacy alive for many years to come.

You’d Think a Feminist Democrat Like Sarah Silverman Would Endorse Hillary, Right? Wrong…

Comedian and actress Sarah Silverman has long championed progressive causes.

In 2008, she urged young people to convince their grandparents to vote for Obama.

In 2012, she jokingly offered billionaire Sheldon Adelson sexual favors in exchange for funding Obama’s re-election campaign.

Now, Silverman has endorsed a candidate for the 2016 election, and it is not establishment favorite Hillary Clinton.

She has endorsed Bernie Sanders.

She made the announcement in a video posted to YouTube.

Here is what she had to the say about the campaign in general:

“If you vote or not, that’s not my business, I’m not your mommy,” she said.

“It’s important that you treat your vote as something valuable, because it is.”

She also noted that she had been supporting Clinton.

This was before she got to know Sanders better:

“Hillary had always been my choice. I’m a feminist,” she said. “Democratic woman president? Yes please.”

“I’m not against Hillary, I’ve just met someone I have more in common with, and his name is Bernie Sanders.”

Silverman elaborated:

“He’s really popular with both sides, everyone likes him, and he’s not for sale, not playing the game and says what he means.

He’s been on the right side of history at every turn—not along with history when it becomes popular, but before it’s popular.”

Bernie has been on something of a roll lately, capturing this past weekend’s caucuses in Washington, Alaska, and Hawaii.

However, he still trails Clinton by over 250 delegates.

She Took in a Female Refugee For a Month. What the Woman Did While She Was at Work Shocked Her

When an Israeli refugee named Meg moved to America a month ago, she didn’t know a soul.

Meg, who is originally from Mongolia, had been living in Israel and immigrated to the United States by herself, leaving behind her mother and son.

Little did she know, she’d soon have family stateside after a refugee settlement worker took her under her wing.

Rachel Zupan is the Women’s Empowerment Program Coordinator and Survivors of Torture Case Manager at Us Together in Columbus, Ohio.

Zupan’s co-worker, Sophie, who has roots in Israel, was excited to host someone from her father’s homeland and communicate in Hebrew, but didn’t have the room at her apartment.

So Zupan opened her home and heart to someone who didn’t even speak English, and says it was the best experience she’s ever had:

“I knew it would be awkward at first, at least for her since she didn’t know me or anyone for that matter. But my time living with Meg was amazing!”

Since Sophie was the only person who could really translate for Meg, she was typically shy around anyone else.

But Zupan tells Independent Journal Review their friendship blossomed one morning when they were eating breakfast in silence:

“While normally I enjoy silence, I can’t imagine how it felt for her to just sit around not able to communicate with anyone except Sophie.

So I got out my phone and started using Google Translate to ask her questions in Mongolian and she would try to answer in English since there was no Mongolian keyboard available for her to type back. That morning was really when the ice broke.”

Pretty soon, Meg started surprising her new friend by cleaning her entire apartment while she was at work, cleaning her dishes and even playing with her cats— something Zupan never expected.

The two grew closer as the days went on, making grocery runs together and Meg even studied English to better communicate.

But after a month, Meg finally landed a job as a pastry chef at a local shop, something she had been dreaming of for a long while.

Zupan recently moved Meg into an apartment of her own and says she instantly wanted to return the favor of hospitality to her new friends:

“The best moment in recent times was when we were moving her into her apartment. We brought in a dining room table with four chairs that someone had donated. She got really excited and told Sophie something in Hebrew. Sophie said that she was excited to have four chairs because she could have me, Sophie, and my roommate over for dinner. She said she wanted to have her ‘friends’ over, so it was just great to be able to feel like we were a community for her.”

Meg apparently told Zupan she always thought she’d end up living on a mattress in a small one bedroom apartment; never in her wildest dreams did she think she’d have something as simple as tables and chairs, let alone friends.

“I feel like I gained not just a friend, but a family member. I miss seeing her when I get home from work.”

Zupan says, despite missing Meg, she’s proud of how well she’s adjusted to America and hopes by sharing her story that more people won’t quickly judge refugees in our country.

College Student Leaves Grandparents in Tears After Delivering On Lofty Promise He Made as 2nd Grader

Stefun Darts made a precious promise to his grandparents as a second grader. While many kids make lofty promises as they dream of how they’ll be able to make their loved ones’ lives better, Darts delivered on his.

Darts posted about the day he fulfilled the promise on his Facebook page:

His post reads:

“GG | GP I promised God in the second grade I would pay off you guys house and help you retire. A promise I would never break. The best and most beautiful things in the world cannot be seen, nor touched… but are felt by the heart.

Even with this, I could never repay you for what you’ve done for me. I sacrificed my teenage and early adulthood of not having fun for this moment. I couldn’t stand you going to work at night, some nights I didn’t even sleep knowing it shouldn’t be like this.

Never have I wrote a check wanting this to be the first one. To all my friends that stood by me over these last 6 years I appreciate you.

Somethings was never said and I’m glad you guys had enough sense to understand I had something greater to complete. GP| GG Take this check and pay your house off, and retire from work.

Y’all owe no man but God. Even copped y’all some tickets to The Bahamas ????????☀ I’ll sacrifice everything for my la familia. P.S – Avaricious. The secret is within.”

VIBE reported on how Darts pulled off the good deed:

Stefun Darts ate microwave pizza for months on end just to be able to give his grandparents the surprise of their lives. The full time college student and founder of the non-profit Caring Heart Youth presented his grandmother and grandfather with a check on March 20th for $15,000 to pay off their mortgage.

Darts also said he gave up going to parties to make the promise happen.

As for his grandparents, they still had four years left to work until their mortgage would be paid off.

Talk about a story of sacrifice and selflessness. Way to go, Darts.

NC AG Cooper Refuses to Defend Bathroom Bill in Lawsuit

We knew it would be a sticky position for North Carolina’s Attorney General, Roy Cooper. Cooper was named as a defendant in the lawsuit brought against Governor Pat McCrory and the North Carolina University system, due to the recently passed House Bill 2, appropriately named the Public Facilities Privacy and Security Act. Cooper is a Democrat who opposes the bill, but because he is North Carolina’s AG, the duty to defend the state against such lawsuits. Cooper is also Governor McCrory’s opponent in the upcoming gubernatorial election.

What is not surprising is Cooper’s refusal to do his job. In a story from The Blaze:

“Not only is this new law a national embarrassment, it will set North Carolina’s economy back if we don’t’ repeal it,” Cooper said. “We know that businesses here and all over the country have taken a strong stance in opposition to this law.”

Indeed, the law, voted on in an emergency session of the general assembly and approved by McCrory as a response to a city ordinance out of Charlotte, NC, has generated a lot of outside pressure. Cultural Marxists from Hollywood, the sports world, and some businesses have all expressed displeasure and a willingness to extort compliance out of the state, if the law isn’t repealed.

For his part, Governor McCrory calls the matter “political theater” and “political correctness gone amok.”

In a further statement, McCrory said:

“I empathize with these people who have some very unique needs. But at the same time it doesn’t mean everyone else should have to compromise a well-established etiquette of men in men’s restrooms and showers and locker rooms.”

Rightly, Republican lawmakers in North Carolina do not trust Cooper to do his job and defend the state against challenges from outside forces. They have also butted heads with Cooper over the voter ID law that requires voters show proof of their identity at polling places, before being allowed to vote. Cooper, true to his party’s line, also objected strongly to the passing of that law.

Having now been made aware of AG Cooper’s weasely refusal to do what the taxpayers of North Carolina pay him to do, House Speaker Tim Moore and Senate leader Phil Berger can feel free to hire outside legal counsel to handle the case.

While Trump Supporters Swear Off Fox News, the Cable Network Announces Huge News for Its Ratings…

It’s been a nearly 20-year, long road, but Fox News has just announced some of its biggest news ever.

In what could be the equivalent of the perfect storm of interest in presidential politics, political discussion and breaking news, the network posted historic ratings all while a contingent of some Donald Trump fans swore they’d tune out:

But Fox hasn’t just dominated in news programming.

The latest ratings reflect that, for the first time in its existence, viewers have thrown out Agent Gibbs of NCIS, the guys on SportsCenter and cartoons on Nickelodeon to make Fox News the ratings champs in all of basic cable.

Here are the rankings in primetime:

  1. Fox News
  2. ESPN
  3. TBS
  4. HGTV
  5. USA

And for all day:

  1. Fox News
  2. Nickelodeon
  3. Adult Swim
  4. HGTV
  5. ESPN

Fox is at the top of the heap when it comes to total viewers, programs and winning in the target demographic of 25-54 years of age.

And Fox News programming occupies nine of the top ten shows on cable TV for news or special programming. Check it out:

  1. O’Reilly Factor
  2. Kelly File
  3. Hannity
  4. Special Report With Bret Baier
  5. The Five
  6. O’Reilly Factor (repeat)
  7. On the Record With Greta Van Susteren
  8. Anderson Cooper 360 (CNN)
  9. America’s Newsroom
  10. Outnumbered

Fox News told Independent Journal Review that it has managed this ratings bonanza — the biggest in its history — despite devoting less time than other channels to presidential debates and town halls. MSNBC and CNN held 15 more town halls and debates than Fox.

MSNBC issued a press release touting its gains in ratings and, indeed, the cable channel did see big gains, as did CNN.

Nielsen reports that in all day programming, Fox news viewership was up by 30%, CNN was up by 48% and MSNBC saw an increase of 54% of viewers.

Donald Trump supporters grew upset with Fox News for its first Republican debate, which was perceived by his supporters as unnecessarily combative. There were rumblings about tuning out, but that obviously hasn’t affected the network’s ratings then and now.
