Trump and Kardashian Join Forces for Alice Marie Johnson

Prison Reform it is

Miracles never do cease.

I’m pretty sure when I started writing at Red State I was ADAMANT that I would never be writing a thumbs up story about these three things together, Donald Trump, Kim Kardashian and anything.

Well, I am here to say, I am happily wrong.

As was covered here last week by Jim Jamitis Not The Onion: Kim Kardashian And Jared Kushner Meet At The White House To Tackle Prison Reform Kim Kardashian used her street cred to get a meeting with the President of the United States, Donald Trump.

Nothing unusual here in the current climate we live in, two reality T.V. stars just meeting for a quick chat. Really. You know President Obama would have done the same.

The topic was prison/sentencing reform and if you have been paying attention to our country the past decade you might have noticed the United States likes to incarcerate a LOT of people.

According to the Sentencing Project

The United States is the world’s leader in incarceration.

There are 2.2 million people in the nation’s prisons and jails—a 500% increase over the last 40 years. Changes in law and policy, not changes in crime rates, explain most of this increase. The results are overcrowding in prisons and fiscal burdens on states, despite increasing evidence that large-scale incarceration is not an effective means of achieving public safety.

Enter Alice Marie Johnson, a first-time nonviolent drug offender who has served a sentence of 21 years for trying to buy cocaine. That’s right, she tried to buy it for selling purposes and has been jailed for two decades.

The meeting between President Trump and Kim Kardashian last month Ann Marie’s case was brought up as a possible commutation of her sentence and today president Trump did just that.

A statement from the White House announcing the commutation said this ( via Via CNN )

“Ms. Johnson has accepted responsibility for her past behavior and has been a model prisoner over the past two decades. Despite receiving a life sentence, Alice worked hard to rehabilitate herself in prison, and act as a mentor to her fellow inmates,” the White House said in a statement Wednesday afternoon.

“While this Administration will always be very tough on crime, it believes that those who have paid their debt to society and worked hard to better themselves while in prison deserve a second chance,” the statement added.

I personally am thrilled that this lady is now being given a second chance at life. How we can imprison people for this amount of time and look the other way is baffling to me for non-violent crimes.

While I am not generally a fan of anyone named Kardashian on this occasion I truly am grateful that Kim took the time to take up this cause and used her “fame’ to get this in front of a person who could do something about it.

I am hopeful that President Trump continues down the path of prison and sentencing reform and helps to set this nation on more reasonable guidelines for incarceration.

The real crime would be to continue throwing people away like Alice Marie Johnson over antiquated rules and guidelines.

Does Memorial Day Still Matter? 2018 Edition.

Memorial Day 2018

Last year on this page I wrote an article called Does Memorial Day Still Matter?.

I think it still does and so did many of you.

This year I wanted to add to this and not just ask the question but actually give examples of why it still does. Actually, I wanted to tell you about two people from my hometown that have died in the service of our country.

Mark A. Lange, LT, USN and Army Cpl. Walter B. Howard II.

These two men were both from Fraser, Michigan and killed in combat.

Lt Lange was shot down over Syria on December 4, 1983. That’s right…1983. We were not in a time of war technically but the United States was offering assistance fighting terrorism even back then. Lt. Lange plane was shot down and died in the aftermath.

Army Cpl. Walter B. Howard II was a classmate of mine in High School. I might have met him once or twice but I did not know him at all. He died on Feb 6, 2006, after he sustained injuries in Ashraf, Iraq, when an improvised explosive device detonated near his M1 Abrams tank.

One of the. died in an undeclared war over 35 years ago and one died while fighting in the surge in Iraq 12 years ago.

They both are heroes and they are worth remembering along with all of their comrades who have fight for this country all throughout its history.

I hope you do.

My show Bourbon On The Rocks goes over part of thier storuies and I hope you will take a momnent to listen.

John McCain’s Bridge Burning Tour to Eternity

(AP Photo/Matt York)

Thumbs Down Sarah

Now he gets all Mavericky.

Senator John McCain from Arizona has a book coming out, “The Restless Wave,” and it sounds like he is going to settle some scores as he fights brain cancer.

Yesterday, it was covered here that he did not want current President of The United States, Donald Trump, at his funeral. Report: When He Passes, John McCain Doesn’t Want Trump At His Funeral

Now comes the predictable shot that IF he could do it all over again, he would not have picked former Alaska Governor Sarah Palin as his running mate. How novel.

From The New York Post

Arizona GOP Senator John McCain said Saturday he’s sorry he chose then-Alaska governor Sarah Palin to be his running mate in the presidential race he lost to Barack Obama.

He told the New York Times that if he could do it over he would have picked former Sen. Joseph Lieberman of Connecticut.

Lieberman told The Times that he hadn’t known McCain felt that way. “It touched me greatly,” he said.

I do understand why McCain would not want Trump at the funeral. They both, at times, act like ill-mannered children with a biting wit. Trump getting the last word at the funeral would probably bug McCain for…eternity.

Former President Bush 43 is a bit of a surprise being John didn’t really like him all that much, either, since Bush beat him in 2000 for the GOP nomination. The Bush-McCain Love-Hate Relationship

Yet, I’m not sure why he would take the shot at Palin. From what I recall, she has been loyal to him and grateful for elevating her to the national level since 2008. Seems uncalled for; perhaps it’s just a way to sell books.

Whatever the reason, this will be the buzz of the talk shows and interwebs as John McCain takes his final bow on the national stage. Whatever else is revealed, I hope he finds peace.

Just a reminder, though. McCain may regret Palin being HIS pick in 2008, but a lot of people in the GOP grassroots felt the same way about him being the (R) pick in that election.

Godspeed, John.

Michelle Wolf BOMBS Everyone At White House Correspondents Dinner

Tell Us A Funny Joke.

Well…two years in a row the White House Correspondents Dinner featured a comedian from Comedy Central (Hasan Minhaj last year) and for the second year in a row they lit up the room. I fully understand why POTUS 45 skipped these.

Michelle Wolf though, stepped it up a notch.

Now I’m not going to sit here and complain that this is the worst thing ever. I grew up listening to Howard Stern, Eddie Murphy, Chris Rock and Don Rickles so I’m used to some harsh stuff. I know that comedy is supposed to make us squirm on OCCASION, but overall it should make you laugh at things we do or observe every day.

I watched the whole event and yes Michelle Wolf did have some funny lines.

Here are some that can be put in print here at Red State.

“Trump is also an idea guy. He’s got loads of ideas. You’ve got to love him for that,” she said. “He wants to give teachers guns. And I support that because then they can sell them for things they need — like supplies.”

“Mike Pence is what happens when Anderson Cooper isn’t gay,” she said, comparing the vice president to the CNN host.

Pence, Wolf quipped, is the kind of guy that “brushes his teeth and then drinks orange juice and thinks ‘mhmm!’ ”

Those are mild shots in today’s toxic culture and I felt good-natured.

The rest of the program it got ugly, crass and at some points just flat out stupid. Her second favorite target of the night after Trump was Press Secretary Sarah Sanders and Wolf went nuclear.

“We are graced with Sarah’s presence tonight,” Wolf said of Sanders. “Every time Sarah steps up to the podium, I get excited. I’m not really sure what we’re going to get, you know? A press briefing, a bunch of lies or divided into softball teams. It’s shirts and skins, and this time don’t be such a little bitch, Jim Acosta.”

“I actually really like Sarah. I think she’s very resourceful,” Wolf continued. “But she burns facts and then she uses that ash to create a perfect smokey eye. Like maybe she’s born with it, maybe it’s lies.”

That is just what I can print.

In comedy, just like radio, silence is NOT golden and even on T.V. you could hear the air being sucked out of the room. That may be cool for an invite to Real Time With Bill Maher but for the “living in the moment” part of the show, you might be dancing to close to the line of this is not brutally funny just brutal.

Reaction on Twitter was all over the board.

The first amendment is alive and well as long as you are not a conservative on Facebook, Twitter or don’t want to bake a cake in Indiana for a gay wedding. Those are just the rules with the very people who were patting themselves on the back about how crucial and wonderful they are at the WHCD.

The real neat trick is that this very association of the 4th estate paid Ms. Wolf to show up and light the place ablaze.  Being most of the press might not like Trump they got their monies worth.

After watching this event I personally was not offended although I did squirm a bit. Mostly I was left scratching my head wondering when the witty funny stuff was going to happen.

I’m left concluding after watching the 2018 version of nerd prom, that Michelle Wolf is the comedic version of Rachel Dolezal.

Pretending to be something she is not.

Alfie Evans’ Brave Fight in This World Ends in an Eternal Life

We Shall Not Forget His Face or His Fight

Today was going to be different.

I went to bed last night after a bit of a rough run here at Red State and then having technical issues for my show last night thinking TODAY was going to be different.

I woke to the news that a child of God I had never met but who had affected the world in such a positive manner had passed on. BREAKING: Alfie Evans Has Died.

I really didn’t want to get up after reading that but then I happened upon a tweet from a person I genuinely admire and I realized that Alfie fought to live and I better take advantage of my time here. The tweet said this…

How small all our day to day troubles seem in the face of such tremendous loss as Thomas Evans and Kate James are suffering at this moment.

Alfie Evans was a child who the British National Health Service had decided was not worth paying for anymore. This is, of course, the natural progression of how things are done when you strictly look at things from a bean counter’s perspective. Quality of care goes out the window and how much are we saving by pulling the plug on what the state decides is a worthless cause now becomes the goal.

Yet even after the decision was made that Alfie was a drain on Her Majesty’s Exchequer this could have all been avoided. We could have been watching and been praying for Alfie and his parents and a miracle recovery while he was treated in Italy.

The beancounters backed by the ever so friendly and stylishly dressed jack booted authoritarians were not going to let this child go seek treatment in any other first world country. The nerve of even asking.

According to LifeNews

Alfie’s parents had hoped to take the little boy to the hospital in order to potentially get experimental treatment that could help his rare degenerative neurological condition but courts repeatedly denied that. Justice Hayden ruled that Alfie’s family would not be able to fly him to Italy for treatment and appeared to say that this was the final decision related to his case. He said flying Alfie to Italy could harm his health because, as court testimony indicated, the flight could trigger possible “continuous seizures due to stimulations” of the flight. But Alfie’s parents are concerned Alfie will die if he doesn’t get care and possible experimental treatment in Italy.

Plus the group Christian Concern who was involved in the last part of this case claimed this would not have cost the Evans or the government of Britain a pound. Not one cent.

Than add-on that these statements  from  the same LifeNews

A British doctors group, The Medical Ethics Alliance, expressed its horror over the treatment of Alfie Evans that it called a “medical tyranny.”

And Italy’s Healthcare Chief has slammed the decisions by UK courts to treat Alfie the way that they had. The President of the Italian National Institute of Health lambasted the UK High Court’s decision yesterday on Alfie Evans’ that resulted in the children’s hospital being allowed to remove life support over Alfie’s parents’ objections.

Pope Francis repeatedly has spoken on Alfie’s behalf and urged that Alfie’s parents be allowed to bring him to Italy.

Members of Parliament are leading a new campaign for a law to prevent the tragic situation happening to Alfie Evans and his parents from happening to any other family. The new campaign calls on MPs to debate the matter in the House of Commons – with potential plans for “Alfie’s Law.”

This makes no sense.

How could in 2018, the country with which the United States of America has a “Special Relationship”, conduct such a monstrous act as NOT ALLOWING a child to go to another country in the European Union for medical treatment?

The country that created the Magna Carta, which spoke eloquently of human and individual rights, now allows children to die instead of allowing them to seek treatment elsewhere.

The country that stood alone for a bit in World War II against fascism in Germany and Italy, now calls it compassionate to end hospital care and allow a child to starve. How ironic that Italy wanted to help save this child and England denied that family the opportunity.

Where was the leadership from Justin Welby, the Archbishop of Canterbury in trying to facilitate this child’s life being protected? As of this writing, I could find no comment at all about this precious child of God from the church.

Where was Prime Minister of Great Britain, Theresa May giving at least a sympathetic comment on an issue that was being discussed fervently in her country? Just like the Archbishop, I could find no mention of anything from her office.

Finally, where have the Royals been?

I wrote about some of them earlier this week in an open letter to William and Kate called Britain Welcomes A Royal Baby, Willing To Let A Commoner’s Die. They just welcomed a new son by the name of Louis Arthur Charles. You would think from the Queen on down the whole family would have been acutely aware of the pain the Evans family was going through.

So far, not a word

This is simply, pure evil.

Seems the whole of England from an official governing and legal capacity has decided to check the checkbook instead of protecting the life. Italy, The United States or any other countries that still put a value on human life before the financial bottom line would have taken this family in. They would have strived to protect that child’s life. They would have done what England would have once done.

I find it hard to believe that only 77 years ago England was led by Sir Winston Churchill who said this on the radio during World War II.

We shall not fail or falter; we shall not weaken or tire. Neither the sudden shock of battle, nor the long-drawn trials of vigilance and exertion will wear us down. Give us the tools and we will finish the job.- Winston Churchill. BBC radio broadcast, February 9, 1941

England had the tools to protect this child and even if they didn’t, the government bureaucrats could have let this family seek care elsewhere that had the tools and WILL to do so.

England and her government not only let Alfie Evans and his family down but they let the world down also. A country with such a rich history of striving to do better just gave up in the face of “normalized” evil and it is incredibly sad.

As hard as it was to get up today I hope to keep this in mind going forward. I hope we all fight 10% as hard as Alfie Evans did these last 5 days to roll back this gross and incompetent mindset. If we do that here and across the pond, sanity will prevail in the world once again when it comes to protecting the truly innocent and quite frankly all people.

God Speed, Alfie and enjoy your new life with no pain but just pure joy and love.

You deserve it.

FIRED: Paul Ryan Forces House Chaplain To Resign

Time To Go

In an unexpectant move on Thursday the chaplain of the House of Representatives, Patrick Conroy, submitted his resignation.

The problem was he didn’t want to leave and was asked to quit by Speaker of the House, Paul Ryan.

From The Hill

House Chaplain Patrick Conroy’s sudden resignation has sparked a furor on Capitol Hill, with sources in both parties saying he was pushed out by Speaker Paul Ryan (R-Wis.).

Conroy’s own resignation announcement stated that it was done at Ryan’s request.

“As you have requested, I hereby offer my resignation as the 60th Chaplain of the United States House of Representatives,” the April 15 letter to Ryan, obtained by The Hill, states.
Through his office, Conroy, who has served as chaplain since 2011, declined to comment on Thursday. His resignation is effective May 24.

Four different sources — two from each party — say Conroy was told that he must retire or that he would be dismissed.

What in the world could lead to a Jesuit Preist who has been a House Chaplain since 2011 to be asked to resign or be fired?

Well, it seems it might have been a prayer. While no one is sure specifically yet rumor on Capito Hill is it might have been a prayer from November of last year.

Once again from The Hill

A Democratic lawmaker said that the Speaker took issue with a prayer on the House floor that could have been perceived as being critical of the GOP tax-cut bill.

On Nov. 6 — the first day of the markup on the GOP’s tax bill — Conroy in a prayer urged lawmakers to ensure the legislation did not exacerbate the nation’s gaping class disparities.

“May all Members be mindful that the institutions and structures of our great Nation guarantee the opportunities that have allowed some to achieve great success, while others continue to struggle,” Conroy said at the time. “May their efforts these days guarantee that there are not winners and losers under new tax laws, but benefits balanced and shared by all Americans.”

A senior GOP aide said Conroy’s exit “was not because of any particular prayer.”

Paul Ryan is a Catholic as am I and I can’t imagine what in the world could have happened to make this necessary.

Only the Lord knows.

Thank You, Senator Ted Cruz

. (Alfies Army Official via AP)

This is one of those times I am more grateful than usual to have a platform like Red State. Everyone here has a ton of different viewpoints, but we are all united in one common cause.

We are Pro-Life.

The case of Alfie Evans has struck a cord over here in the former colonies of the United Kingdom for a number of reasons. So many of the excellent writers here at Red State have spoken more eloquently than I ever could. Here are some of the examples.

This Is the Real Reason Britain Won’t Release Alfie Evans to Italy

The American Left Is Silent On Alfie Evans Since They Believe His Type Should Have Died In The Womb

Petition To The Queen Of England To Help Alfie Evans Reaches Hundreds Of Thousands Of Signatures

Would seem like a slam dunk for any developed, civilized nation like Britain to want to protect children. Take care of them. Give them a fighting chance to live.

Really, what country prevents parents from taking children to another country to receive care to extend their life? Since when is that a criminal activity?

Some in the U.K are willing to defend this evil policy and take to task those on this side of the pond who have an issue with it. Writer Sean O Grady at the Independent even takes issue with former politicians and talk show hosts here for commenting.

The nerve.

In his piece Americans using the Alfie Evans case to criticise the NHS are deluded about the realities of the US’s healthcare system he takes to task former Governor Mike Huckabee, talk show host Steve Deace and Americans in general being we just don’t get it.

From the article

The bottom line, to be frank, is that parents cannot treat their child like an item of personal property with untrammelled liberty, or else there would be no laws against child abuse or cruelty. The issue before the courts was the pain and welfare of Alfie, no more or less.

thus, no parent can retain or dispose of a mortally ill child as they would a used car, and it is stupid to think human life is just another parental chattel. It isn’t, and nor should it be.

Of course, wanting to take your child to Italy for the care of an illness is akin to child abuse or owning a used car. #Amazing.

Well, Sean, you missed one current elected official who has been one of the few to speak out on this and has always spoken eloquently in the defense of the innocent.

Senator Ted Cruz-Texas

Senator Cruz on Wednesday released a statement that in part said

“I urge the UK government to grant the Evans family’s request to treat their precious child in Italy. Americans strive to achieve the promise of ‘life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness’ for all our citizens, no matter how young or old. I encourage all my fellow Americans to join me today in praying for Alfie and his family.”

This may seem like an easy thing to do but if you have noticed not many current elected officials are weighing in on this matter here. Plus there are many other things our politicians could be talking about that aren’t as icky or could get them in trouble.

That is why I appreciate Senator Cruz offering a statement and just all around giving a damn about a lil boy he has never met, who is fighting for his life in a country, we used to call home.

If it was easy or popular everyone would be doing it, but it’s not.

I want to add my voice with Senator Cruz and all those that are praying for Alfie and his parents and for the UK government to see fit to do the right thing.

Thank you, Senator Cruz, for joining us here at Red State on the Pro-Life side. We appreciate it.

Sen. Cruz Issues Statement on Alfie Evans

Urges UK government to grant family’s request to pursue medical treatment in Italy

WASHINGTON, D.C. – U.S. Sen. Ted Cruz (R-Texas) today issued the following statement urging the UK government to grant the request of the family of Alfie Evans to pursue medical treatment in Italy:

“Alfie Evans was born on May 9, 2016 in the United Kingdom. When he was only several months old, he was struck by a mysterious illness, and slipped into coma.

“Doctors initially thought that Alfie would not survive long, but he fought back time and time again, until a chest infection forced him to rely on a ventilator.

“Alfie’s parents, Kate James and Tom Evans, wish to seek experimental treatments for what is thought to be a mitochondrial condition. Italy has granted Alfie citizenship and offered to transport him to a Vatican hospital. But UK and European courts have denied their right to seek alternate treatments for their son and instead have forcibly kept him in a hospital. Now they have turned off the ventilator and are waiting for him to die. These events remind us of the tragic case of Charlie Gard last year.

“It is a sad irony that while the people of the UK are busy celebrating a royal birth, its government is brushing off a commoner’s right to life. It is a grim reminder that systems of socialized medicine like the NHS vest the state with power over human lives, transforming citizens into subjects.

“Alfie’s life support was turned off two days ago. National Health Service (NHS) doctors expected that he would pass away within minutes. Again, he fought back; at the time of this writing, he is continuing to breathe without assistance. But time is of the essence.

President Bush ’41’ on the Rebound

Pres Bush 41 and his Houston Rockets both rebound nicely.

President George H.W. Bush is a fighter. We all knew that.

Yet when word of his being checked into a hospital and in I.C.U. just a day after his wife’s funeral spread throughout the internet, I believe people silently expected the worse.

Well, you can’t keep a fighter pilot down for long. Especially one that jumps out of airplanes for his birthday well into his EIGHTIES.

According to Us Magazine President Bush is on the mend.

That’s the spirit! George H. W. Bush’s health has improved so much since he was admitted to the ICU on Sunday, April 22, that his only concern now is the NBA playoffs.

A statement shared by the former president’s office on Wednesday, April 25, began, “President George H. W. Bush has been moved from the intensive care unit at Houston Methodist Hospital to a regular patient room, and is expected to continue his recovery there for several more days.”

“He is alert and talking with hospital staff, family and friends, and his doctors are very pleased with his progress,” the statement continued. “President Bush naturally thanks everyone for their prayers and good wishes.”

The press release ended with an assurance that the 41st president is “more focused on the Houston Rockets closing out their playoff series against the Minnesota Timberwolves” than his health.

This is welcome news for the Bush family and all Americans. Our 41st President is on the mend after the loss of his wife and this reminds us that on occasion, we do have people in public life we can look up to and should.

God Speed Mr. President and for this one and only time…
